On the Green

Martin Kaymer´s sporting talent appeared very early. As a child he was more keen in playing the ball and caused great disturbance within the defensive lines of the rivals as a forward. Nobody knows if he would have been a successful professional in soccer, but he decided to focus on golf. When he was 10 years old he made his first steps on the golf course of GC Mettmann where he learned to play and love the game.

His biggest successes as an amateur have been with the Golf Club of Bergisch Land in Wuppertal in the German Bundesliga. At the age of 15 years he already played with handicap 0 and named the South African Ernie Els as his idol. After turning professional at the end of 2005 he played on the EPD Tour, a tournament session for young professionals. He scored an incredible round of 59 at the Habsberg Classic on 21 June 2006, the lowest result a German professional ever played in an official tournament. At the end of 2006 he was fourth in the annual ranking of the Challenge Tour which guaranteed his eligibility for the PGA European Tour 2007. The eligibility for the Challenge Tour was already guaranteed by his victory at the Vodafone Challenge in July 2006.

With impressive results (5 Top Ten rankings) on the European Tour 2007 he secured not only his eligibility for 2008, but was also awarded best newcomer of the season by Sir Henry Cotton´s “Rookie of the Year”Award.

His first victory on the PGA European Tour came at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship in January 2008 as the youngest German Winner of an European Tour event ever. This success put him into Top 50 of the World Golf Ranking. He crowned this successful year with his second win on the European Tour at the BMW International Open in Munich June 2008 as the youngest winner and first German player ever.

In July 2009, Paris and Scotland came out as the places for two victories in a row. This success has been prevented first by a foot injury which forced him to a break of nearly two months. After returning to the Tour at the Castello Masters (22 – 25 October 2009), he gained two Top-Ten results and finally finished third in the European Tour Ranking. Also he was named “Player of the Year“ by the PGA of Germany for the third year in a row.

2010 could be declared as the year of Martin Kaymer. In his very first tournament of the season, he became champion of the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship. But the highlight of the year was his Major victory at the PGA Championship 2010 in Kohler which has to be emphasized in three aspects. Kaymer was, beside of Bernhard Langer, the only German ever to win a Major. He was also confirmed member of the European Ryder Cup Team 2010 where he could triumph together with his European team-mates against the USA. As the most honorable award following his major win, he was named Honorary Member of the PGA European Tour at the end of the season, which entitles him to play lifetime. After his major win in August, he achieved three unbelievable victories in a row in the Netherlands and in Scotland, following Tiger Woods (2006) and Nick Faldo (1989) who accomplished this feat before. As the youngest golfer following Northern Irishman Ronan Rafferty (1989) and the second German behind Bernhard Langer, Kaymer crowned his fantastic year with winning the „Race to Dubai“ (Order of Merit) of the European Tour.

Martin Kaymer is a character with a very tight familiar commitment. Values like down-to-earthness, respect and moral are shaping his presence on and off the green. His friends and his team are characterizing him as a concentrated, focusing, but always full of joy of life person - a more soft-spoken human who convinces despite all successes by down-to-earth attitude. Up to now he has kept his interest in and his love for soccer and he is an avowing fan of the 1. FC Köln (Cologne Soccer Club).
